"Everything was a game for him. I don't think he had one sincere bone in his body," Genevieve told me during a recent Zoom conversation. It was only then they learned about the mental disorders this behaviour matches: antisocial or narcissistic personality disorder. I decided it was important to revisit the subject. Over the past months, I've interviewed nearly 50 women for Australian Story and heard an unimaginable range of examples of deceit and emotional cruelty in relationships.
She was 19 and living at home with her mother, Sharlene, when she met Peter at a pub in 2015. "He swept me off my feet. He was charming. He was kind and very sweet. He made me feel confident, made me feel safe."Peter, who was 19 years older, told Brodie he was recently divorced and lived with his elderly parents.
