ANALYSIS: The Dragons and Warriors need shaking up, but their new coaches feel like more of the same
When Penrith officials heard Anthony Griffin was in the running for the Dragons job, they reportedly couldn't believe it.
Part of the reason the Broncos of 2015 were such a breath of fresh air was because the rapid, athletic style of play was such a clear contrast with the team of 2014. Of course there are many reasons for a team to get better, but at a certain point it becomes strange that these guys walk into jobs seemingly because they've done them before, regardless of how well or poorly they performed. So you could forgive fans for the collective resigned shrug across social media when Griffin and Brown were announced.
Look at the success the Roosters have had under Trent Robinson, who barely played four NRL games, was named coach at just 35 years of age, and has led the team to three titles in seven seasons, with this season's premiership still within reach. The Cowboys' appointment of Warriors assistant-turned-interim-coach Todd Payten and the recruitment of former English Super League coach Justin Holbrook by the Titans have the potential to take things in a new direction for those clubs.
