New APPEA CEO Samantha McCulloch is leading a push to bolster the gas industry’s case against mounting opposition from activists.

Samantha McCulloch, the newly arrived chief executive officer of the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association, is leading a push to bolster the gas industry’s case against mounting opposition from activists, the Greens and even some within the new federal government. She spoke to Carbon Challenge from her office in Canberra.

AFR: Why do you think gas has had this problem? In the past six or 12 months it has become really apparent in the public debate that the activists are now targeting your industry. Why is that happening, do you think?I think this focus by activists on the gas industry is missing in some ways the bigger picture and the importance of gas again in terms of delivering energy security and emissions reductions.

Across the community there is relatively strong support for the industry. We employ 80,000 Australians directly. If you look across the supply chain, it’s more like 165,000. There are a lot of business, industries and households. It is a fundamental part of our economy, our society. I think what is important is ensuring a balanced debate about the future of gas in the energy mix.

AFR: Did people misread that ACCC report where the headline was “10 per cent shortfall” in gas next year?I would just highlight again the nuance that there is 167PJ of contracted gas and that’s three times the projected shortfall in the domestic market, so we’re confident the domestic market will be well-supplied in 2023.

AFR: You were at the IEA for the last couple of years heading up the Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage unit?

Many small businesses are in a ‘difficulted situation’ with new public holidayMany small businesses are in a ‘difficulted situation’ with new public holidayCOSBOA CEO Alexi Boyd says the public holiday for Queen Elizabeth II's passing is “quite a difficulted situation” for small business owners as many will not be able to get workers in to cover the shifts. “Some businesses would welcome the extra foot traffic, if you in a holiday area for instance you will see a great surge but were still in a situation where we’ve got worker shortages,” she told Sky News host Chris Kenny. “Even if you’ve got an increase in that foot traffic you may not be able to service your customers as best as you wish to.'
