It was the low-cost Glasgow airline that promised so much, yet the troubled Air Scotland brand would ultimately have its wings clipped within just a couple of years of its launch.

Precisely 20 years ago, on March 29, 2003, Air Scotland began operations from Glasgow International Airport.

But all was not as it seemed. Air Scotland initially had two Boeing 757-200s at its disposal, both of which were actually owned and operated by Electra Airlines of Greece. Following a short-lived link-up with Air Holland, which collapsed in 2004 due to financial troubles, the Glasgow-based airline then began operating under the air operator's certificate of Greece Airways. But by this point, the firm was already down to just one 757 aircraft.

To make matters worse, an aircraft chartered to pick up the stranded passengers returned empty-handed back to Poland over yet more financial issues.Further financial troubles resulted in a flight from Glasgow to Malaga being delayed at short notice in the spring of 2005. Passengers were bussed to Manchester and put up in hotels. A total of 34 hours had passed when the flight finally departed for Spain the next day.
