Abundance, by artist Lindy Lee, will be unveiled along with an enormous companion piece in recycled metal at the National Gallery of Australia in October.

Already a subscriber?Few people can say that they owe their life to gold but, for Byron Bay-based artist Lindy Lee, it’s a basic truth. Her mother, with Lee’s two older brothers in tow, cycled across Communist China to Hong Kong with a false-bottomed suitcase lined with gold, a lifeline for the young family to begin a new life.

The $10 million artwork, created with gold supplied by ABC Bullion, is a companion piece to her monumental $14 million sculpturecommissioned by the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra for its 40th anniversary in 2022. Both go on public display in late October.has been realised in collaboration with artisans from W.J. Sanders, Australia’s oldest gold and silversmith.

“When I took the design to the team at W.J. Sanders, they said: ‘Yes, we can make this for you,’ because of the seeming simplicity of the shape,” she said. “But they knew what an engineering nightmare it was going to be. This is why we had to ask the engineer used by Anish Kapoor for help.”Ouroborosrequired a different approach – not only because of its size but due to gold’s malleability.
