The 71-year-old man accused in the fatal stabbing of the 6-year-old boy in Illinois, which also seriously wounded his mother, was motivated by the Israel-Hamas war, officials say.

"On behalf of the entire Justice Department, I want to express my deepest condolences to his family and his community as they grieve his loss," Attorney General Merrick Garland The Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said Al-Fayoume was Palestinian American. "Detectives were able to determine that both victims in this brutal attack were targeted by the suspect due to them being Muslim and the on-going Middle Eastern conflict involving Hamas and the Israelis," the sheriff office's statement read.
