Eduardo Chávez, DEA Special Agent in Charge of the Dallas Field Office, talks about battling deadly fentanyl and the many misunderstandings about it. He's...
I feel a lot of frustration in this fentanyl fight. That frustration, and sometimes anger, shows up in a variety of spots.
Some people quietly say to me their community won’t recognize it until more deaths occur. Others are in pure denial. It’s not a red alert to kids when someone takes a couple of pills out of their pocket in the locker room and offers them around. It’s not like a couple of shards of methamphetamine or a loaded syringe of heroin.I hear a lot of questions from parents like, “Why aren’t the schools doing more to stop the drugs from coming on campus?” or “Why can’t the cops do more?”
The market already was shifting to regular fentanyl users, and they were fine with Crayola green pills. No need to try to fool them. When I hear the question, “Why would a dealer put enough fentanyl into a pill to kill someone?” my answer is, “They aren’t trying to intentionally kill us. They are just indifferent.”They are putting a drug so potent it’s dosed in micrograms in medical settings into the hands of people who have no idea what they are doing. One person dies. Another gets high. It comes down to the physiology of individuals and the lack of quality control in illegal manufacturing of the fentanyl pills.
