AFL: Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley didn't mince words when asked on a range of topics, including his coaching future with the club and whether Dan Houston will remain with Port in 2025.
Despite public stances suggesting the contrary, it has become increasingly clear All- Australia n defender Dan Houston is assessing his departure options — and it seems there are four rivals pressing hardest for his services.Houston, whose elite disposal use, dangerous slingshot ability and intercepting traits are evidently highly sought-after, is contracted to Port Adelaide until 2027. But he is no certainty to be donning teal again next season.
The Blues, who are anticipated to again challenge for a flag next season, would surely need to surrender two first-rounders — given that they would likely fall later — in order to satisfy Port Adelaide. The Saints are hoping their incoming compensation for losing Josh Battle lands at Pick 8 — one slot after their organic No. 7 choice — in which case they could dangle one of those two top-10 selections in front of the Power and still make a pick at the top end themselves come late November.
Hypothetically, they could use that premium selection — possibly coupled with another relatively early choice — to try and entice Port Adelaide.Without discounting Noble, dual All-Australian Houston would be an upgrade — his kicking efficiency this season was a career-best 81.5 per cent; a figure considered above average among AFL defenders.
Plus, Houston can provide assistance to Liam Jones and Rory Lobb — if he sticks around — having posted an elite-rated 6.5 intercept possessions per game as recently as 2022.
