It’s strange now to think that there was a time when models did not spin off their success into a side hustle or seven., I’m struck that the Venn diagram overlap of fashion and entertainment began with Cindy, Christy, Naomi and Linda. There were models before these four, of course, and even supermodels but there was something about the potent combination of these women that changed the industry seismically, and forever.
They made fashion come to life and gave it dimension beyond the runway. They bridged the gap between commerce and art, being among the first to work both in lucrative advertisements and editorial. They were highly marketable to both fashion audiences and the mainstream; they were celebrities, their statements became part of pop culture.They made fashion their own, and in doing so they showed that it could be – well, maybe not for everyone – more than simply clothes on a runway.
There’s probably no better example of this than the Fashion Cafe. Modelled on kitschy theme restaurants such as Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Cafe, Fashion Cafe was owned by Tommaso and Francesco Buti but fronted by models Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Elle Macpherson and Christy Turlington.But it marked a shift in the zeitgeist.
