The full and the short of it: lengthy trouble for England | danbrettig
At the end of the 2015 Ashes series, after Stuart Broad was arguably the difference in what remains the most recent bout won by England, Alastair Cook had his considered press conference answer interrupted by the childish giggles of Joe Root.
And once it was Australia’s turn with the ball, Mitchell Starc, Jhye Richardson and the debutant Michael Neser immediately fed an ample slips cordon with chances in ways that Root could only have dreamed about. Australia have at times over the years faced a similar struggle whether at home or away. Steve Waugh’s penchant for posting a four, five or even six slip and gully fielders tended to encourage bowlers to pitch shorter as mid off was often left vacant.
In 2019, the tourists raked over the data for UK wicket-taking to a greater degree than ever before, and landed on the fact that it was all about hitting the top of the stumps and letting the seam do the work. Pat Cummins perfected the trick with the ball that so memorably knocked Root over at Old Trafford.
Marnus Labuschagne, something of an Adelaide specialist himself, said he had been given plenty of balls to leave alone. “There’s two ways you look at it,” he said. “Most of their bowlers economy rates were two, or even under two. So if you bowl slightly more back-of-a-length it’s tougher to score, but not as attacking and you don’t bring the stumps into play as much. We try and learn from that and make sure we are challenging the stumps as much as we can.
