“I asked the Garden Museum to purchase this from eBay for the exhibition. I’m fascinated by the difference between wild and cultivated roses, hence the title. There are various schools of thought about where– aka the dog rose – got its name.
“Philip Treacy designed this hat for Alexander McQueen’s famous Sarabande collection – I’ve given McQueen the title of fashion’s rosarian before, and you can see why here. His designs for this show are covered in roses, all of which are done in natural colours, which is interesting. Philip generously spent quite some time reviving the hat for the exhibition.”Der Rosenkavalier
“This is a beautiful silver rose from Glyndebourne, created by Britain’s foremost costume designer in the ’50s, Oliver Messel, for a production of the operaby Richard Strauss. It’s delivered by the male protagonist to the female lead, and then of course the two of them fall in love.”“In addition to being one of the most famous couturiers in Paris in the early 20th century, Poiret became the first designer to launch his own perfumes.
