Loco Home Retrofit was able to get off the ground as a co-operative thanks to funding from Co-operatives UK ad CooperativesUK
“We want to help people get off fossil fuels and help bring to an end Glasgow’s contribution to climate change.” This lofty ambition belongs to Loco Home Retrofit and its co-founder, Chris Carus.
Chris said: "There were only two of us to start with, but we knew we wanted to be a co‑op. So we began with two members and opened membership up to others six months after starting. To set up their co-operative, Chris and his co-founder Tom Nockolds received help from Co-operatives UK's Business Support for Co-ops, delivered in partnership with The Co-operative Bank.
"The support gave us the confidence to keep going. In the start-up phase, it would have been easy to reduce our ambitions or give up." “Meeting them was inspiring. Our theory is that in each town or community, you need a local trusted advisor rooted in that community, like us and People Powered Retrofit – and the co-op model is the perfect way to do this.”The UK's best-kept business secret?
