Dominic Perrottet once described the Coalition’s policy of privatising public assets and using the proceeds to fund new infrastructure as “the golden key” unlocking opportunity for NSW.
Having increased the number of tollways in Sydney, the Coalition is using more taxpayer funds to help motorists afford to use them. Minister for Metropolitan Roads Natalie Ward claims the new toll relief system “aims to optimise” Sydney’s motorway network by encouraging drivers to switch from busy arterial roads to tollways.However, Sydney University transport economist Professor David Hensher warns the changes risk worsening congestion by encouraging the use of private vehicles relative to public transport.
“It has been very shortsighted to establish so many toll road arrangements in a relatively piecemeal fashion and the consequences are now coming home to roost,” she said.
