What kind of look are you thinking of going for? You’ve been rocking some excellent confection-y dresses on tour.is very warm, and I want to represent that era especially because it’s at its closure at this point. I’d love to find something that's simultaneously fun and chic but also kind of weird. I tend to like structurally odd things, which is why I really like people like Simone Rocha and ThreeAsFour because they do different types of architectural clothing.
I’m always so surprised to see people who are bothered by that. I want to shush them because I don't want the Recording Academy to take notice. I feel like we got to a certain place in our career where we were being recognized for the first time at a higher level, and I’m very happy to be part of that category. I will take all the Grammys that the Recording Academy wants to give me.
If you could go back in time one year ago, before the book and the record, what advice would you give yourself? We sold out five nights at Union Transfer. It’s a venue in Philadelphia that’s very dear to my heart—I kind of helped open that venue, I was one of the first employees. My old boss, who runs a concert promotion company called R5 Productions where I used to intern at, is a part owner there. And I used to work the coat check at this venue.
And then like what, six or seven years later, we came back and sold out five nights at Union Transfer. When I came out, they brought me out to the lobby. Sean had a sign hand-painted on top of the coat check that read: Michelle Zauner's Coat Check. And next to it was a plaque that said, “May everyone that works at Union Transfer go on to sell out five nights here.” It was such a crazy full circle moment that reminded me of the people who’ve been a part of my musical life for so long.
