Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said the proposal would fill large gaps in Australia's environmental laws where projects are approved by the environment minister without considering the impact on the climate. "It's crazy that in the midst of this climate crisis and environmental collapse a new mine or development can get environmental approval without any consideration of climate pollution or damage.
Labor will need the support of all 12 Greens senators, as well as one crossbencher, to get the bill through parliament.
