Snape's Potions book in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince hinted at a major Deathly Hallows plot twist involving Harry and his mother, Lily.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince laid the foundation for Harry's search for Voldemort's Horcruxes and Snape's murder of Dumbledore, but it also made a secret connection to a significant series plot twist. A great deal of the mystery of Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts revolved around the identity of the self-proclaimed Half-Blood Prince, who had jotted down several clever tips in a copy of "Advanced Potion Making.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY When Harry started Professor Horace Slughorn's Potions class in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, he was forced to borrow a used copy of "Advanced Potions Making" and was annoyed to find it full of scribbles from the previous owner. However, it wasn't long before he realized that these notes were helpful, and he quickly began to use the book's advice to gain favor with the teacher.
Lily's name was mentioned almost every time Harry used his Potions book, and this, paired with Hermione Granger's frequent argument that the Half-Blood Prince could have been a girl, seemed to imply that Harry's mother had been the book's previous owner. Harry never reached this conclusion, though he once wondered if James could have been the Prince. Of course, it had been neither of his parents.
The Half-Blood Princes' Potion Book Reflects Snape & Lily's Friendship Ending In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry learned that Snape and Lily had been best friends since they were very young but had gone their separate ways at the end of their fifth year at Hogwarts. Since Half-Blood Prince makes it clear that both students were whizzes regarding potions, it's easy to assume that this was a significant part of their friendship .
Of course, Snape would have taken N.E.W.T level Potions in his sixth year, just like Harry, so he would have started scribbling in his textbook just after he and Lily stopped being friends. The two had gotten into a fight about Snape's affinity for the Dark Arts and curses, and Lily demanded that he choose between their friendship and his Dark ambitions. Unfortunately, Snape chose the former, and the Prince's book made it clear that the following year saw Snape go into a steady decline.
