A hidden restaurant, behind a fake fridge, with four courses of elevated seafood dishes inspired by your favourite chippy classics. So far, so Nico Simeone ... but does it live up to the hype?
The concept of fine dining on a budget has long drawn crowds to Finnieston, and if you roll the calendar back to the restaurant’s very first six-course tasting menu, you’ll remember it was The Chippy, a nod to the city’s love for all things battered and fried.
Enter Sole Club; a speakeasy-style fish restaurant hidden behind an elevated chippy takeaway. So far, so Nico …Where is it and what’s it like? You’ll find a small door where Six by Nico used to be, all clad in dark wash and looking just a little bit mysterious. It opens onto the chippy which, admittedly, looks very good and will merit a try very soon.
What did you have? Similar to the original Six by Nico concept, there are four courses here . You choose from three plate options for each, and can add snacks and sides, followed by dessert, if you’re feeling especially hungry. We absolutely were. From then on we had a competition over who ordered the better course - and round two was all mine courtesy of the scallop, glazed chicken wing and jus, salsify and preserved lemon. Scallop and crunchy chicken wing together? Chef’s kiss. Bring me round another plate of it, now - I’ll happily eat it again. Blue shell mussels ‘puttanesca’ with wild garlic flatbread was also a hit, however; the anchovy and tomato sauce absolutely packed full of flavour.
