Rings of Power has done a lot to improve Dwarves, but The Hobbit fixed a big Lord of the Rings Gimli mistake before the Amazon Prime series debuted.
After years of Gimli being the most well-known Dwarf in Middle-earth for the wrong reasons, one of the best aspects of Rings of Power was its representation of Dwarven culture, but The Hobbit fixed a Lord of the Rings Gimli mistake before the Prime series premiered. Peter Jackson’s Hobbit movies offered the first fresh example of Dwarves after his Lord of the Rings trilogy focused on Gimli representing everything about them to add comic relief.
Whereas Gimli was used for comic relief and every other character in the Fellowship given more serious material, Thorin is a dramatic hero in the vein of Aragorn or even Frodo, and gets to have many scenes in the trilogy that reflect this. He makes rousing speeches about reclaiming his home, defeating Smaug, and returning Erebor to its former splendor, as well as succumbs to dragon sickness and must be reminded of the importance of his legacy.
Gimli made Dwarves only seem interested in killing Orcs, insulting Elves, and drinking ale, not trying to be romantic through words and actions, thus reducing Dwarves to a set of negative traits. When Kili is ill, Tauriel finds him a special Elvish remedy, and when she’s in danger, he doesn’t hesitate to be her champion, establishing a relationship built on trust and mutual respect rather than trading insults and blows.
