A seaside boom town in New Zealand known as a haven for retirees, holidaymakers and day trippers would be a 'death trap' in the event of a tsunami, residents say. 9News

People from Bay of Plenty and Waikato flock to Pāpāmoa's heavily developed beaches every summer but if everyone tried to flee in a hurry, the two roads out would be gridlocked in minutes "condemning people to death".

"If you live along the Eastern Bay of Plenty coastline you're a sitting duck if a tsunami hits. It's a death trap. Look at the chaos a few years ago - all roads were clogged up, an absolute mess, nobody could get out."
