For the first time in 20 years, the ACT has elected independent members to parliament. Thomas Emerson and Fiona Carrick have become the first independents elected to the ACT Legislative Assembly since 2001.

ACT Labor has governed the territory for the last 23 years, but since 2012 has needed the help of the Greens to rule.When asked how Mr Emerson might work with the new look government, he said he'd negotiate in good faith. Ms Carrick said she wanted to address what she called "an imbalance" in the distribution of "social infrastructure" across Canberra."The community in the south can see this, they know it, and they want a fair share, they want a fair go."

"I think all the Independent candidates should be so proud of what they've done in this election," Mr Pocock said."They've provided alternatives and I think we're seeing more and more people wanting candidates who are accountable to them and who's gonna take up local issues.
