Tesla tuning is a thing, and Randy raced it up Pikes Peak, again!
On this week's episode of The InEvitable, Ed Loh and I sit down with professional racer andlegend Randy Pobst, as well as Ben Schaffer, the founder of noted Tesla tuning shop Unplugged Performance. I'm thinking Randy doesn't need much of an introduction , but Ben does. Ben's previous life was as a modifier of legendary JDM machines including Godzilla, aka the mighty Nissan GT-R.
Ben's company was formerly called Bulletproof Automotive. In 2013 Bulletproof moved into some fancy new digs next to SpaceX in Hawthorne, California, just a few miles from's HQ. Tesla's design studio happens to be located at SpaceX, and it turns out that at least back in 2013, Tesla designers were fans of exotic Japanese metal. Before too long, Ben got to test-drive a Model S. That night he went home, thought about it, and decided the future was Tesla tuning.
I first met Ben last year at the 2021 Hypercar Invitational in the paddock of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. I'll always remember that we met on a Saturday for a specific reason. Just two days earlier, , and here I was two days later talking to the man who had modified one for a run up Pikes Peak. His driver? My buddy, my pal, the man I'd filmed countless episodes of, and Best Driver's Car with, Randy Pobst. I'll also never forget watching Randy rip the Plaid down the front straight of Laguna Seca, passing a Huracán as if the Lamborghini was coasting.
