Troubled waters for Vettel. 👀 9WWOS

In the wake of Charles Leclerc’s stunning performance at the Bahrain Grand Prix, when only engine problems prevented the 21-year-old from Monaco claiming his first Formula One win, much of the commentary has been around the impact the performance will have on Leclerc’s Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel.

Verstappen is 21, meaning he has 2019 and 2020 to achieve the goal. His problem is Leclerc is a couple of weeks younger, and right now, if you had to wager your life savings on which of the two will be world champion first, you’d be plonking the entire amount on Leclerc.Realistically, Verstappen has next to no chance of being world champion in 2019. All things being equal, he’d be expected to finish fifth, with the Mercedes and Ferrari drivers ahead of him.

That statement may have seemed preposterous just a month ago. While everyone knew before the season started that Leclerc was a future star, nobody was sure exactly how he’d settle into life at Ferrari. Two races into the season, and it’s fair to say he’s had the measure of Vettel.

By contrast, Leclerc has driven in just 23 races, finishing on the podium only once. By any measure, this should be a season where he learns from the master, setting himself up for a long period as the Ferrari team-leader.
