Known as the 'The Flash' for his breathtaking pace on the footy field in the 70s and 80s, Michael Graham's induction to the Australian Football Hall of Fame has capped off his journey from the Point Pearce mission to footballing immortality.
Michael Graham , a champion footballer for Sturt in South Australia and St Mary's in the Northern Territory , was so renowned for dashing past opponents he earned one of footy's great monikers: "The Flash".
"I grew up on football with my family and my brothers, and my two sisters looked after me when I was growing up," he says.He remembers, with a smile, his parents being strict on discipline – which helped him develop a clean pair of heels. "I could run a bit. That was the main thing. Jack Oatey would just tell me to get the ball and go," he said.Fellow Sturt great Rick Davies, who played in two premierships with Graham, can vouch for his speed.
"Back in the day when I was playing there weren't very many Indigenous players playing, and now we've got them playing everywhere, all over with the AFL, and I'm very proud watching them as an Indigenous player myself."Now his greatest achievement has sunk in, Graham says he's been able to reflect on the journey the game and his talents have afforded him."Footy's been a big part of my life.
