A key component of The Jung Center’s work has focused on stress, anxiety and burnout. Psychotherapist Sean Fitzpatrick guides people out of the shadows of depression.

Rather than swatting away a pair of killer Bs that have long buzzed about, Sean Fitzpatrick instead studies them. A psychotherapist, and a curious sort, Fitzpatrick will halt a conversation and ask for a pause and a moment of reflection when words like “burnout” and “bootstraps” get used.

“Throughout history, this notion of burnout occurs with teachers, health care workers, social workers, people whose values drive them to do this work," he says."Sometimes it ends up exploitative. They aren’t always paid well. They deal with hazardous psychological and emotional work conditions. There’s a shadow side to their work.”Nestled in the Museum District

“It was maintained as a gallery space because Jung so closely associated creativity as something essential for human growth and development,” Fitzpatrick says. “We had this toolbox, and we’ve added to it as we’ve gone along,” Fitzpatrick says. “Some of the people we’ve worked with for years on secondary trauma, burnout. The county health department had called us to work with them. Then the pandemic hit, and we were in a place we could help. Though it did force us into a crash course in creativity.”

“We would see a lot of organizations that would say , ‘You need to handle this,’” Chaoul says. “We’re trying to change that. We’re trying to help the organizations feel they have a responsibility to their employees to help them with their wellness. It’s not just saying ‘You need to handle it.’ It’s about giving them tools to do it.”

Friedman opens discussions about anxiety discussing her own panic attacks “so people can feel safe talking about their own," she says."When you open it up like that, it allows people to just talk.”
