An unauthorised television interview was designed to end perceptions the Liberal Party had shut down its newly famous candidate. But did it help?

Scott Morrison’s declaration last week that “I’m not going to allow her to be silenced” was contradicted by the obvious reality. If she was sympathetic, Petersen didn’t show it. “Do you appreciate the harm and hurt caused by those sorts of offensive comments, and are you sorry?” she asked towards the top of the four minutes that made it to air.“I have been very chastened by this process,” Deves replied. “I recognise that trying to prosecute arguments about complex, nuanced and difficult subjects ...”“Sorry, complex, difficult and you would subjects [sic],” she resumed.
