'The Last of Us' Premiere Recap: Welcome to the Apocalypse

TheLastOfUs season premiere gave us world-building, video-game callbacks and plenty of brooding Pedro Pascal

, though we do get the disgusting imagery of a dead body absorbed into a wall of fungus when Joel and the others traverse an underground tunnel late in the hour. And we discover that Marlene needs Ellie to get to her other Fireflies out west because Ellie is somehow immune to the infection.

* John Hannah does some nice work in the opening scene in 1968, playing a scientist who warns of this exact kind of climate change-aided catastrophe. His monologue could easily play as a bald exposition dump — a way to contextualize what is happening while we’re witnessing events from Joel and Sarah’s POV — but Hannah absolutely sells the innate fear of the thing.
