HBO series The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic drama set 20 years into a global pandemic caused by a parasitic fungus that turns its hosts into zombies — via TheGrowthOp

“Our body temperatures are high enough that most organisms, their proteins would denature at that temperature and so they can’t survive in our bodies,” Bryn Dentinger, a biology professor at the University of Utah and curator of mycology at the Natural History Museum of Utah,In fact, more than 400 species of cordyceps exist and the mushrooms have been harvested and used medically for thousands of years.

“Let’s get real. Cordyceps can not infect humans,” he wrote. “This is fiction weaved into a theme speckled with mycology and exploiting Mycophobia: the fear of fungi. It is natural for humans to fear that which is powerful but mysterious and misunderstood.”went on to praise the series for combining sci-fi with the “fascination, fear and joy of fungi.”

“These mixed emotions make for great writing, and the sets, although apocalyptic, are strangely beautiful as nature digests the cities with flora and mycelium,” he added.Article contentThe Last of Us
