Despite reports that they have been completely cut from the show, The Last Of Us zombies may still use spores, says co-creator Craig Mazin.
The infected in The Last of Us may still have the opportunity to spread the Cordyceps fungus through the air. While in the game, the infected spread the fungus through bites and airborne spores that mutate into a full-scale infection; in HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us, Cordyceps spreads through bites and tendrils that emerge from the mouth.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Since The Last of Us uses game-accurate dialogue, the lack of spores has been one of the very few major changes so far, and it has been a great boon in the lives of Joel and Ellie , as it's one less thing to worry about. Unfortunately for the wandering heroes, The Last of Us never makes their lives easy.
"I don't necessarily think we've eliminated spores from the universe of our show. We just haven't gotten there yet. It's possible that they may come back. We may have a plan, is my point."What Is The Cordyceps Virus? While Cordyceps isn't a virus, The Last of Us uses a real fungus infection as part of the lore of the show. Most often known to be present in ants, the Cordyceps fungus takes over its hosts' brains and essentially controls their minds.
In the show The Last of Us, the fungus leaps infecting humans after learning to adapt to warmer global temperatures caused by climate change. The infection origin comes from the Jakarta opening in episode 2, meaning that Cordyceps was first discovered in humans in Indonesia before rapidly spreading to the rest of the world through bites and infected food.
How Has The Last Of Us Changed The Infected The infection origin is a serious change to how the infected are presented in The Last of Us, but it isn't the only change, nor is the temporary removal of the spores. The infected also communicate through a hive mind in the show — something that is never seen in either of the games. Instead of just responding to sound, they can communicate if a fungus is so much as touched, making stealth kills more difficult.
