Olympic squads have traditionally been 18 players with four emergency reserves, but a late rule change will now see the reserves given a greater chance to play.
The IOC has changed the rules around reserve players during the Olympic football tournaments, allowing teams to swap reserves in and out in the case of medical issues.
In addition, four reserve players have typically been allowed to travel, train, and stay with the team over the course of the Games, but could only be called into the 18 if there was an injury to an original player. France national team head coach Herve Renard has been one of the figures publicly campaigning for the changes seen during Tokyo to be made permanent, andIt now effectively gives coaches 22 players to choose from , allowing for better decision-making around load management and injury prevention.
"I would have preferred to have them all on this list, but that was not possible ... It will be up to me and the staff to mobilise all these players, even if at first they may say to themselves that they will not be able to contribute much. Let's all get the best results together.", saying that she was already training her team as though they were the full 22 players, just one short of the 23 that have been permitted at FIFA Women's World Cups since 2015.
