A potentially fatal new virus is sweeping New South Wales, with thousands of cases emerging across the state in the last week.

Human metapneumovirus or HMPV can cause upper and lower respiratory disease in people of all ages and potentially progress to severe illness such as pneumonia and bronchitis.

Hazard reduction burns taking place in Sydney to reduce fuel loads near populated areasHazard reduction burns taking place in Sydney to reduce fuel loads near populated areasSmall hazard reduction burns are taking place in parts of Sydney in an attempt to reduce fuel loads near densely populated areas. The RFS has burnt 40,000 hectares across New South Wales since the first of July. New South Wales Rural Fire Service Commissioner Rob Rogers said hazard reduction burns can only take place when the conditions are suitable. “We’ve had some really wet years and we’ve not hidden that fact … last year we only got 24 per cent of the planned activities done but at the end of the day we’re doing it when possible,” Mr Rogers said. The RFS had scheduled a 250 hectare-large burn that was to take place today around the Hornsby region but was postponed over concerns of hot and dangerous weather coming into the weekend. The New South Wales Rural Fire Service crews are now focused on small hazard reduction burns around Sydney.
