The live action “Little Mermaid” , was directed by Rob Marshall and stars Halle Bailey as the title character. Melissa McCarthy plays Ursula, the malevolent sea witch who steals Ariel’s voice in return for giving her legs and a chance to canoodle with the dreamy Prince Eric . Javier Badem, Awkwafina and Daveed Diggs round out the ensemble.All that watery magic didn’t come cheap.
Disney has had success with the strategy of raiding its storehouses and putting a live action spin on animated properties such as “Aladdin” , “Beauty and the Beast” , and “The Lion King” . Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3″ took third place with $20 million and an estimated $25.3 million for the four-day holiday, pushing its domestic total to a sizable $300 million. Universal and Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” came in fourth with $6.3 million over the weekend and an estimated $8.3 million during the holiday period. Domestically, the movie has made a gargantuan $560.9 million after eight weeks in theaters.
