Over the years, it has been the site of an orphan school, slaughter houses and a rail yard. Now, it is the proposed site for a massive stadium project for Hobart.

Hobart 's Macquarie Point has a long history, which has included being the site of an orphan school, slaughter houses, rail yards and sewage works. In 1811, Governor Lachlan Macquarie arrived in Hobart Town and renamed a river bank area known as Fosbrook's Point after himself, and it became known as Macquarie Point .

A lumber yard was later established for landing timber from ships, a practice still happening more than 100 years later. In 2014, a strategic framework and masterplan was released, with a vision for the site to be "vibrant, liveable, sustainable" and offer opportunities to "live, work, invest and play".Art gallery's vision to take decadesThe plan included an art park, a major fire and light installation dedicated to celebrating 40,000 years of continuous culture in Tasmania, and a Tasmanian Aboriginal history centre.

An earlier version of the planned stadium at Macquarie Point vs an independent proposal for a stadium at nearby Regatta Point. In 2022, after growing pressure for Tasmania to get an AFL license, Macquarie Point was named as the preferred location for a stadium. The numbers are eye-wateringly large, with some economists worried the financial burden will be too great, but here's how those pushing for Hobart's new stadium say it stacks up.

The government pours cold water on it, saying the taxpayer could end up footing the entire bill which was an "unacceptable risk".The new plans submitted to the Tasmanian Planning Commission show several zones, and will still include an Aboriginal Culturally Informed Zone and an Antarctic Facilities Zone.

Housing is still a part of the plan, with medium density apartments on the north-east of the site and will feature commercial and retail space on the ground level.
