Qantas’ 'fast and free' Wi-Fi on domestic flights will be available for international travellers from the end of this year.
All international travellers on Qantas flights can soon enjoy a once paid for in-flight perk for free that will be gradually rolled out from the second half of 2024. Qantas ’"fast and free" Wi-Fi on domestic flights will be available for international travellers from the end of this year.
Qantas’ executive manager for product and service, Phil Capps, told The Australian the airline did not want to premiere its free international Wi-Fi until it felt the connectivity could match that offered on domestic flights. The companies, which merged last year, utilise a network of satellites that orbit the globe at the same speed of the Earth’s rotation, meaning less satellites are required to provide global coverage.
“When we first put it on, it was just a means of keeping connected, very much so for business-purpose travellers who might be going from Sydney to Melbourne for the day, and they might be completing presentations or other work," he said. “When we acquired the A380s, it was before 2010, the available on-air infrastructure was quite limited, so the work that’s involved in us now taking an A380 and fitting it with the latest gen Wi-Fi is considerably bigger,” Mr Capps said.
