Ahead of the new season of ‘The Mandalorian,’ Jon Favreau takes VF inside the show's secretive soundstage.
In the Volume, the environment does exactly what it’s told. The temperature is cool and dry—it has to be with so many electronic components. And with the right amount of tarps and careful outflow, you can even make it rain inside the ring of electric light for a little while, if need be.
It’s also a good way to maintain a crew. Seasoned talent have immense value, and are likely to have families, pets, mortgages, and other obligations. In other words, they’d prefer to stay close to home.’s digital sets allow shows like this to get its pick of employees. “There are so many hours of stories being told because of streaming that you have five to 10 times as many episodes of television being made now than you did previously,” Favreau says.
The tech is still evolving. As of last year, hard surfaces were still the thing that worked best on the screens. “If this was a jungle, it would be a lot harder,” Favreau says. “lends itself to hard surfaces—rocks, metal, droids. It makes it easier. Organic stuff is harder.” It has another shortcoming. “The exterior stuff with sunlight is the one thing you really can’t do well here,” he says. “So we still have outdoor sets that we go to with traditional blue screen. … What we've learned is when the light hits the walls it reflects; the screen reflects.”Favreau shows off StageCraft like a kid showing his friend a hard-to-find haul of new action figures. There is no more powerful digital toy in Hollywood.
