Frankie Jules-Hough died while her son and nephew were seriously hurt when Adil Iqbal crashed into her Skoda
When Adil Iqbal - one hand on the steering wheel and the other taking a selfie video - lost control of his dad's BMW and smashed into Frankie Jules-Hough's Skoda Fabia, with three kids on board, it was by no means the first time he had shown an arrogant and reckless disregard for other road users.
It was this reckless attitude towards other road users which culminated in him crashing into Frankie's car on the M66 in May. The police investigation revealed it was no momentary lapse by Iqbal that day - he had been driving recklessly for the previous ten miles. One motorist told police Iqbal was 'an accident waiting to happen'.
He climbed out of the passenger window of the BMW and told officers who arrived at the scene he had done nothing wrong. He claimed the crash was down a problem with one of the back tyres of the rear wheel drive BMW. There were no problems with the tyres. So when it came to Iqbal's sentencing hearing at Minshull Street Crown Court in May, it wasn't just Frankie's wider family who were shocked and disappointed at the 12-year jail sentence Judge Maurice Green handed down for causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. So was the Attorney General.
They agreed that the original sentencing judge should have paid more heed to these features, namely that the defendant had decided to ignore the rules of the road, had demonstrated a 'prolonged, persistent and deliberate course of driving', had carried out 'dangerous manoeuvres' including repeatedly undertaking cars at high speed, had used his phone at the wheel for a 'prolonged period' and had driven 'significantly' over the speed limit.
