Spoilers ahead: The Palladinos speak to VF about the end of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ and ending the series in a tight five—from tackling Lenny Bruce’s death to dreaming up Midge’s star-studded future.
Midge’s children were collateral damage. There’s been hints all along. I mean, the first season she basically gets up on stage and says, what if you weren’t meant to be a mother? In that day and age, there was no question. Nowadays, women think about it sometimes. I did. I went, The madness has to stop. The only one who’s going to stop it is me.
So, it is a thing that you can think about now and wasn’t thought about then, because women weren’t supposed to break out and find their own way. So, when it came to Midge and her children, it was completely natural. Once she got on a path, if she was going to make it, if she was going to do what she had to do, that means she was going to travel. That means she was going to be gone. That means you can’t stop focusing on your career because it’s that one miss.
And at least from us, it’s not a judgment on Midge, one way or the other. There’s many ways to go about your life. There’s plenty of parents that I know who helicopter, and they’re there for everything that their children do, and those children are going to be just as fucked up as these children because they don’t have five seconds to have their own brain space. So it can go both ways. It’s just a woman who discovered ambition and decided that was going to lead her.
Susie has this great monologue about how she’ll never fall in love again like she did with Hedy . Do you agree?I don’t believe she ever had love the way she had with Hedy. The love of her life was Midge Maisel. Because Susie has her own fucked-up-ness to deal with. Excuse me. I don’t know how you print that—I guess there’s stars in between [the letters]. But Susie also made a choice.
Another big question mark hanging over the final season was how Lenny Bruce’s role in Midge’s journey would end, and if his death would be shown. How did you settle on this more open-ended outcome? We never felt like we needed to flash forward to Midge hearing about Lenny’s death. I think we even flirted with it, but it felt too melodramatic and too easy. We didn’t necessarily need to see his end. We wanted to reflect his journey.
