That action has ramifications that draw in her eventual teammates: her adopted niece, S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau , introduced as a little girl in the first film and who gained superpowers as an adult in the Disney+ series “Wandavision”; and Kamala Kahn , the teenaged Captain Marvel superfan from Jersey City whose own superhero origin story was also told on the small screen in “Ms. Marvel.
Turns out, Carol’s revenge on the Supreme Intelligence had devastating effects on the Kree, earning her the nickname “The Annihilator” among the humanoid species. It also put her on the hit list of the Kree warrior Dar-Benn , whose recent discovery of a powerful ancient relic not only poses a danger to Carol but threatens the entire space-time continuum. Dar-Benn’s new toy comes also with a neat hidden feature that causes Carol, Monica and Kamala to switch places whenever they use their powers.
Enjoy the ride instead. “The Marvels” features some of the most inventive action scenes the franchise has ever seen. One particular sequence in which Carol, Monica and Kamala constantly switch places as they fight bad guys in space, on the Kree planet and at Kamala’s house, is breathtaking. The film has fun, too, exploring Carol’s secret life off Earth. The section when the Marvels travel to a planet where the native language is singing is wacky and unexpected.
