Conor, a former MasterChef Australia and The Challenge contestant, met Chris on Grindr in Adelaide. Their nine-hour first date led to a lasting relationship, and they are now engaged and planning to move to England.

Conor, a former contestant on MasterChef Australia and The Challenge, has revealed how he met and fell in love with his partner Chris. The couple are now engaged and plan to move back to England together next year.

Conor had lost his career in hospitality because of Covid and decided to become a contestant on MasterChef Australia. By the time he was eliminated in 2021, restaurants still were not open and he did not know what to do with his life. His lease was coming to an end in Melbourne and he was not doing well with the lockdowns and people recognising him from TV.

So he decided to retreat to his father's place in Adelaide for a while. One sunny autumn weekend, as he was miserably assembling flatpack furniture at his dad's, he realised he had to get out of the house. He got on Grindr and a lovely guy named Chris, fresh from England, started messaging him. Conor had lived in the UK in his early 20s and knew how hard it was to make friends in a new city.

Conor Met Chris on Grinder in Adelaide

Still processing the shock of being ghosted, he invited Chris for a drink just as mates so neither of them had to be lonely on such a beautiful day. Chris said he could not imagine anything better. They met at Brighton beach and had a beer. What followed was one of the most wonderful and unexpected dates of Conor's life.

It went for nine hours. They chatted and chatted, not wanting it to end. Conor was not anticipating any chemistry but it was there, and they spent the night together. The next day he took Chris on a tour of Adelaide's wine regions and then sent him on his way.

Chris was only in town for two days, en route to his new life in Sydney. Conor did not think he would ever see him again. But they stayed in touch as Chris settled into the harbour city. One thing led to another and, by May, little more than a month after they met, they both wound up in Melbourne.

Chris had been offered a job and Conor had always planned to return at some point. Without ever having discussed the details, or even admitting to themselves they had caught real feelings, they had moved to the same city and became a sort-of-couple, while still keeping things casual. In July, Conor was scheduled to be on a reality show called The Challenge, filming in Argentina.

Chris Supported Conor During The Challenge

The show had a Survivor and Big Brother vibe and he did not think he was going to do very well. He figured he would be eliminated within a week. Much to his surprise, he turned out to be quite the Challenge beast and made it all the way to the final. They were only allowed one 15-minute video call a week, and in that month Conor used 53 of his 60 allotted minutes talking to Chris.

Conor is not a person who likes to show vulnerability, but the demands of the show broke him in ways he was not expecting. Being filmed 24/7 and doing all these insane challenges put his mental health on a knife's edge. They were not even official, but Chris would pick up the phone at 3am and just be there for him. No games, no nonsense: he was Conor's support when he needed someone the most.

In the final week of the competition, they were given time to write a letter to someone in their life. Conor wrote to Chris and all his feelings came flooding out. He told Chris he was falling for him and that if he ever read this letter it meant he was no longer just falling. He was, for sure, in love.

Conor Revealed Love in Letter to Chris

He tucked it away and made his way back to Melbourne to recover. Once home, it became clearer that the reality TV filming had taken a real toll on his mental health and the network started paying for his therapy. Chris was with him all the way. A few months later, Conor gave Chris the letter.

And Chris told him he loved him too. Conor did not know it at the time, but those weekly therapy sessions were a blessing in disguise: they really set him up to be the best partner he could be for Chris. When Conor lived in the UK, his dream was to find the love of his life and stay there for ever.

Chris had his own ideas about what his time in Australia would look like, and they definitely did not include meeting his future husband in the first week. They might not have got what they thought they wanted from their big solo adventures, but in a roundabout way they have both found exactly what they were looking for. They are engaged and plan to move back to England together next year.
