Vogue looks back at what past winners wore to collect their statuettes.
Marlee Matlin in a distinctly ’80s look at the 1987 ceremony, where she won Best Actress forThe most memorable Oscars look from the ’90s is, without a doubt, the paper taffeta Ralph Lauren gown that Gwyneth Paltrow wore to accept her Best Actress statuette for. The Miramax leading lady eschewed the help of a stylist, and originally planned on wearing either Armani or Celine for the big night.
Also of note: Susan Sarandon’s lavish copper gown by Dolce & Gabbana at the 1996 ceremony, where she won the top prize for her turn in. Only a fortnight before the ceremony, Stefano Gabbana had offered to make Sarandon’s dress – which represented something of a sartorial risk for the Best Actress frontrunner. Despite taking inspiration from Italian sirens like Anna Magnani, the then 30-something designers had never actually created a look for the Oscars before.
