The multimillion-dollar Clovelly home that’s like Dr Who’s Tardis | juliepower
A Japanese-inspired screen made of 4700 wooden blocks conceals the dead and the living from Maiko Nicolaysen’s new home opposite Waverley Cemetery. At night, the handmade block wall glows so warmly that everyone calls it “the lantern”.Made from 4700 hand-made wooden blocks, the screen conceals Waverley Cemetery across the road.
Trias’ Jennifer McMaster and Jonathon Donnelly were inspired by the work of the late Mexican Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Luis Barragán, who built courtyard houses. Like the Mexican homes, the Curl Curl house was not designed as a fortress. To make it friendly, it has vines and trees peeking over walls and visible from the street, McMaster said. Where privacy is required, the architects used solid timber panels that open to provide a breeze.
At Clovelly’s Rosewood, the wooden screen was the “icing on the cake”, Blanchfield said. “It was going to be very obvious from the street, so it had to be special.”
