When Lorraine Mejias was in labor five years ago, a racist nurse mistreated her. Now, she's helping other women of color navigate similar situations.
Lorraine Mejias, of Parlin, with her daughter Eliana, who's now 5 years old. After being mistreated by a racist nurse at the Perth Amboy hospital where she gave birth, Mejias was motivated to become a doula.Lorraine Mejias would rather not think back to her time in a Perth Amboy hospital five years ago, during the days leading up to her daughter Eliana’s birth.
Q: Lorraine, your memories of the days leading up to your daughter’s birth are harrowing. What difference do you think having a doula, and particularly a doula who was also a woman of color, would have made in your overall experience at the hospital?having a doula in the room with me, and one who was also Black, would’ve made a huge difference! My daughter’s father tried to help but he wasn’t in the best mindset to advocate for me. I mean, think about it ...
but what role are doulas of color playing in trying to reverse that? What role do you feel you and those on your staff are playing? We can’t completely eliminate medical racism, although like I said, being that we are doulas of color, it’s easier for us to pinpoint, address, and ultimately limit discrimination when it occurs because we know what it looks like.
