Stuck at home and bored during 2020, he decided to teach himself German on Duolingo “to keep me a bit occupied and for something a little different”.He describes the learning experience as well-structured and clear about the progress he is making. Indeed, of the 1.8 billion people who are learning a language, Mr Brothers estimates that 1.4 billion are learning English. The rise of language-learning apps poses a threat to traditional English language colleges and testing providers, and could change international student recruitment patterns.
In May, Duolingo’s financial results revealed a 55 per cent increase in bookings, with 2.9 million paid subscribers. Monthly active users rose to 50 million, up 25 per cent from the quarter for the year before.Claire Field, a consultant to the tertiary education sector, says the trend could in future disrupt English-language testing providers such as IELTS, TOEFL and Pearson, which have an oligopoly in Australia for visa purposes.
