The competitive climbing boom on campuses has caught the attention of ESPN, which for the first time next April will broadcast the national college climbing championships
A generation of kids who grew up amid the boom in climbing gyms is transforming the college scene from ragtag recreational clubs into a competitive leagueAmanda Wooten, a 20-year-old from suburban Atlanta, transferred to Georgia Tech last year. A big part of the draw: the school’s excellent competitive rock-climbing club.
Ms. Wooten was a top-ranked climber in high school. But the college she initially attended didn’t have a strong club. Georgia Tech’s team, on the other hand, placed second in a college climbing championship this year, and boasts a 50-member team.
