Opinion The new “It” boy is here, and he’s wearing dangly earrings and make-up

Singer Machine Gun Kelly, 31, became engaged to actor Megan Fox, 35, last Thursday, which means it’s now official – that is, if the romantic choices of some of the world’s most desirable women are anything to go by – the new “It” boy isn’t a hyper-masculine Marvel superhero type, instead, he’s wearing dangly earrings, nail polish and make-up.

Kelly is hardly alone. Presenting in a gender non-conforming way, while attracting a successful, beautiful, older seems to be a trend right now. Pete Davidson, 28, who enjoys face masks and painted nails, and wore a dress to the Met Gala in September, has been dating Kim Kardashian West, 41, for more than three months. Meanwhile, singer Harry Styles, 27, who frequently dons ornate necklaces and pearl-drop earrings, and wore a tiered Gucci gown on the cover ofSociology professor Lauren Rosewarne, who specialises in gender, pop culture and politics at the University of Melbourne, says one part of the trend is not entirely new. “We’ve been through periods in pop culture history where the stars of the day have played with our ideas of gender, Boy George and David Bowie being two obvious examples.” The difference in 2022, says Rosewarne, is that it’s a reflection of the widespread questioning of gender itself. “A binary masculine/feminine identity isn’t the reality for an increasing number of people – particularly young people,” she says.of 19,000 people across 27 countries found that those who identify as transgender, non-binary, non-conforming, gender-fluid, make up 4 per cent of Gen Z compared to 1 per cent of the rest of the adult population. Additionally, one in five said they weren’t straight.
