American newspaper The New York times has officially called for US president Joe Biden to announce he will not continue to run for re-election after a trainwreck debate with his predecessor Donald Trump.

'Not the man he was four years ago': The New York Times editorial team officially calls for Joe Biden not to run for President after trainwreck debate

The 90-minute face-off between the current and former President covered major issues concerning US voters, including inflation, immigration, climate and abortion. “As it stands, the president is engaged in a reckless gamble. There are Democratic leaders better equipped to present clear, compelling and energetic alternatives to a second Trump presidency,” they said.

Before the Times editorial board weighed in on the dismal debate, two of the publication’s top columnists called on Mr Biden to step down. "It involves party strategists, it involves elected officials, it involves fundraisers, and they're having conversations about the president's performance, which they think was dismal, which they think will hurt other people down the party in the ticket and they’re having conversations about what they should do about it," he said.
