The alleged gunman’s view of Muslims as “invaders” has deep roots on the continent he visited multiple times. French writer and right-wing provocateur Renaud Camus published a book titled “The Great Replacement,” a phrase that the accused gunman took as the title of his manifesto.

By James McAuley James McAuley Foreign correspondent focusing on French and European politics and culture Email Bio Follow March 19 at 5:20 PM PARIS — After an avowed white nationalist allegedly killed 50 Muslims in two New Zealand mosques on Friday, heightened scrutiny was directed to right-wing parties across Europe, where the accused gunman said he had traveled extensively and gleaned some of the inspiration for his Islamophobia.

Tarrant titled his manifesto “The Great Replacement,” an obvious reference to the French provocateur Renaud Camus’s 2012 book of the same name, which warns of a doomsday scenario in which Europe is overrun by nonwhite, Muslim immigrants from North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.French writer and right-wing provocateur Renaud Camus published a book in 2012 titled “The Great Replacement,” a phrase that accused gunman Brenton Tarrant took as the title of his manifesto.

Although Le Pen has kept her distance from Camus and dismissed his signature idea, she showed her familiarity with it in a 2014 interview. “The concept of the ‘great replacement’ requires an established plan,” she told France’s Journal du Dimanche newspaper. “I don’t participate in this conspiracist vision.”
