Some experts say Australia needs to focus on prevention and strengthening primary care to effectively deal with the projected rise in dementia.

A new report from the Australia n Institute of Health and Welfare has projected that the number of people living with dementia could more than double over the next 34 years. The Australia n Institute of Health and Welfare has said it estimates that about 267,700 people are living with dementia in the community, which represents almost 70 per cent of people with the condition.

But that number sharply increases to 71 people per 1,000 for people between 75 and 79, then to 429 per 1,000 people for those 90 and over. "On average, it takes about three years to get a diagnosis of dementia, longer than that, if it's younger onset dementia. "We also have to plan for care in regional and remote areas and develop our services for people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and First Nations Australians."Dr Sykes said if nothing significant changed in Australia's response to dementia there will be increased pressures on the health system.
