If you aren’t careful, you could be sabotaging your chances of landing a job before your interview even begins. A job interview begins the minute you step foot into the building and doesn’t end until you’ve left. Every person you interact with, from the doorman and receptionist to another person in the waiting room, could be evaluating you. The way you interact with them can make or break your chances of landing the job.

Why? The way you treat people is incredibly telling of your character. Everyone is on their best behavior during the interview itself, but true colors show through when people don’t think they’re being watched. The way you interact with people who aren’t in positions of power is a good indicator of how you’ll interact with colleagues, especially those in a position below you.

More and more companies are looking at candidates’ behavior as part of the criteria for hiring. It’s hard to judge behavior from just an interview, so hiring managers enlist other people throughout the office to help them. They’ll most often ask the receptionist for their opinions and overall impression of a candidate. The receptionist sees everything, not just your interactions directly with them.

Remember, you’re being judged from the minute you walk in the door to the time you walk out, so be on your very best behavior at all times. You never know who’s watching.
