It would balance the Botanic Gardens and Domain on the opposite side of the city, although it would be smaller. It would be highly accessible to all Sydneysiders via the new Barangaroo Metro Station.Most importantly, our colonial and pre-colonial heritage would be saved. So, too, the economic benefits from tourism in this fragile area.
This is common sense. A sweeping new foreshore park is far more valuable than any short-term financial profit to NSW from selling public land. John Howard heeded this call. NSW should do the same and, in the spirit of Governor Macquarie, create a legacy for future generations. Linda Bergin is a long-time advocate for the protection and preservation of heritage sites on the Sydney Harbour foreshore.
