It’s selfless, it’s not particularly fun and it hurts a lot. Yet shot blocking can swing teams’ momentum, especially in the NHL playoffs. Just ask Jamie Oleksiak of the Seattle Kraken.
In the span of about three minutes last month, Seattle Kraken defenseman Jamie Oleksiak experienced the full range of outcomes—good, bad and painful—that come with his unusual propensity to fling his body in front of a flying hockey puck.
Oleksiak is the NHL playoffs leader in an unusual statistical category: shots blocked by players who aren’t goalies. He has a knack for anticipating the movements of onrushing opponents and getting in the way of their shooting lanes by lurking near the crease when the puck is in the Kraken’s defensive zone.
